Accidents, Incidents and Dangerous Occurrences

All accidents are preventable. Help us by:

  • Mopping up spillages immediately and putting up slippery floor warning signs if the floor is not left in a dry, safe condition.

  • Call the Appointed Person; details of First Aiders or nominated persons can be found on your site notice board or staff area.

  • Reassure the patient that help is on the way.

  • Wearing the personal protective equipment that you are provided with.

  • Do not move the patient or offer drinks as you may make injuries worse.

  • Ensuring you are wearing correct non-slip safety footwear.

Accidents must be recorded in the Accident Book immediately. Your Manager or Shift Manager will tell you where the Accident Book is and who is responsible for recording accidents.

Fire Safety

What should you do if you discover a fire?

  • Ensure you are carrying out your work responsibly in accordance with the proper safety rules.

  • Raise the alarm.

  • If it is a small fire and you can tackle it without risk to yourself, you can attempt to extinguish it using the correct fire extinguisher but only if you are trained to do so.

  • If you cannot safely extinguish the fire quickly, evacuate the building and go directly to you assembly point.

  • Make sure that you are accounted for.

  • Do not re-enter the building until the all clear has been given.

Which fire extinguisher should I use?

  • All fire extinguishers are have a small colour coded band. Take care and make sure you know their contents before using them.

In the event of a fire, things you need to know

  • Where your nearest fire alarm point is

  • Where your nearest fire extinguisher is

  • Where your nearest fire exit is

  • Where a second means of escape is

  • Where your assembly point is

  • Who you are responsible for reporting to

  • Take the time to find these things out.

REMEMBER IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO USE THE WRONG FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT AND TACKLE A BLAZE THAT YOU CANNOT COPE WITH - WHEN IN DOUBT LEAVE THE FIRE AND EVACUATE!

What should you do if you hear the fire alarm?

  • Keep calm, reassure and assist customers and visitors

  • Leave the building immediately by the nearest fire exit

  • Do not stop to collect personal belongings

  • Move quickly and quietly, do not run

  • Where possible close windows and always close doors behind you

  • Go straight to your assembly point

Manual Handling

  • Do NOT lift anything that is too heavy (that you cannot move with your foot),

  • If cleaning chemicals are accidentally splashed onto your skin or eyes, always wash away with plenty of water. Seek medical advice if irritation persists and tell your Manager.

  • If it is heavy get help,

  • Always consider the safest way to undertake the task, but if beyond your comfortable/safe lifting ability, simply do not lift it and report to your supervisor,

  • Use mechanical aids such as trolleys if possible,

  • To lift anything, bend at the knees with your head up and keep your back straight,

  • Tell your supervisor of any medical conditions that make lifting difficult for you.

Substance Hazardous to Health

Most of the chemicals you might use are not dangerous if you use them properly and know what to do if something goes wrong, such as a spillage. But some chemicals need more careful handling than others.

  • Use chemicals only as directed

  • Refer to the suppliers guidelines

  • Wear protective equipment as required

  • If in doubt, ask your manager

Let your Manager know immediately if you experience any adverse reactions to substances, for example headaches, nausea, skin complaints.

Use of Cleaning Chemicals

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions,

  • Follow the procedures you have been shown by your Manager,

  • Do not mix chemicals,

  • Wear the personal protective equipment you have been issued with (and report to your Manager if it is not available, is defective or doesn't fit properly),

  • Do not store chemicals in food or drink containers,

  • Clean up spillages straight away
